In 1849, Edmond Fougera, a pharmacist from France, established a business in Brooklyn, NY, importing French and other foreign medicines. Fougera’s knowledge of medicines and genuine concern for his customers attracted immigrants who recognized and trusted the products they knew. Soon, this credibility grew, and the company began to manufacture its own pharmaceuticals. The brand became synonymous with quality, value, and reliability, and quickly grew in popularity with physicians and pharmacists across the country.
By the 1930s and 1940s, the company had extensive lines in cardiovascular medicine, dermatology, anesthesiology, and radiology. During the 1980s and early 1990s, Fougera further entrenched itself as a specialty pharmaceutical manufacturer of topical steroids, antibiotics, and antifungal products. Building onto its product portfolio from 1999-2006, Fougera received more topical generic FDA approvals than any other company, including many first-to-market launches. Today, Fougera is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sandoz and is part of the Novartis global network. Together, Sandoz and Fougera are dedicated to developing affordable, high quality, and first-to-market dermatology products, thereby meeting the needs of US patients today, tomorrow, and beyond.
