Frequently Asked Questions

 Q: What is Swimmer’s Ear?

A: Also known as acute otitis externa, Swimmer’s Ear is a painful condition resulting from inflammation, irritation, or infection. These symptoms occur after water gets trapped in the ear, which allows for the spread of bacterial or fungal organisms. Because this condition is common among swimmers, it is known as Swimmer’s Ear.

Most common among children, although it affects adults as well, Swimmer’s Ear results in 2.4 million healthcare visits in the United States each year.

Q: What are the symptoms of Swimmer’s Ear?

A: The most common symptoms associated with Swimmer’s Ear are:
Sensation that the ear is blocked or full
Painful ear discomfort
Itchiness, redness, and swelling
Sensitive to the touch, or when you shake your head
Decreased hearing

Q: Why do I need to remove trapped water from the ear?

A: Besides the discomfort and decreased hearing that can occur, water trapped in ear can cause other complications. Even apparently clear pool or sea water contains pollutants and harmful bacteria.

Q: Does Swim-EAR® work immediately?

A: Swim-EAR® drops are a drying agent. When used as instructed, Swim-EAR® goes to work immediately to relieve clogged water which can get trapped in the ear canal after swimming or bathing. Swim-EAR® uses the only FDA approved ear-drying formulation because it has been proven to be safe and effective. Swim-EAR® drops are available over the counter, without a prescription.

Q: When should I use Swim-EAR®?

A: For maximum effectiveness, use of Swim-EAR® drops is recommended immediately following swimming or bathing. Use 4-5 drops in each ear, alternately turning the head to the opposite side. A mild warming or tingling sensation may be experienced by some individuals and that is quite normal.

If you experience swimmers ear symptoms such as pain, discomfort, itchiness, or even temporary hearing loss, contact your doctor. Swim-EAR® drops should not be used if any swimmer’s ear infection is present, if there is any ear discharge, or if you have a perforated ear drum. Do not use on broken skin, or if pain is experienced. Consult a doctor in all these cases.
